Subject: Heroes Hockey Challenge
Re: Invite from Colonel David J. Anderson, MSM, CD
To all my fellow Brothers,
Last Thursday & Friday evening, Jan 26th & 27th 2012 some of us CAV members were very
fortunate enough to use with great pride tickets to both “The Heroes Hockey Challenge, Hockey game
on Thursday Jan 26th 2012 and the very prestige Heroes Hockey Challenge Gala (Mess Dinner)” paid
for by Sport Check and forwarded to our Units through, Caveman (Bruce) of Ypres Unit, who in turn
received them from Ubique Unit, Chilliwack, BC. Thanks to Caveman and Ubique Unit. With out a doubt
I had a super great time, as I am sure all the fellow CAV members in attendance did. Let me tell you
we had a great presence from The 3rd CAV. The following Units had representation at this wonderful
event; Coriano Ridge, Ypres , and Kosovo. Kosovo Unit was very much honored to have the offering and
ability to have 5 (five) of our Unit members in attendance. Our CAV Vests were worn and displayed with
great pride from the Hockey game in the Saddle Dome, to the Gala Event in the Telus Convention
Center. I have seen that on Facebook is some photos of the Gala event with our members.
We were all accepted with pride and honor from many of the folks. There were Dignitaries from
the Lt Gen of Alberta all the way through to Canadian Forces Generals, Colonel(s) down to the Private.
Wives, girlfriends, yes husbands and boyfriends of solders. What an honor to be invited to attend and
be amongst these Heroes. I did as I am sure all of us CAV members had the opportunity to chat with
most people in attendance, and if not we chose not to because we were so busy with other Heroes. The
folks were so open and friendly to each and every one of us CAV members. Thanks to everyone for this
wonderful opportunity.
During one of my discussions, which was within 15 minuets of us CAV members arriving I had
the great pleasure to meet with and chat with Colonel David J. Anderson, MSM, CD. Regimental Colonel
Princes Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). During our chat that allowed me about 10 minuets of
his time one to one the Colonel asked me about “The CAV” with full interest. He was a motorcycle rider
and planned on buying a new ride soon. He had also seen us riding around displaying our Crest with
pride. After explaining what we were all about and him passing onto me his business card, the Colonel
explained that there was a reason that he came to chat. First we were all Veteran members of the
Canadian Forces whom he could not pass up the opportunity to meet and thank for our time and service
then the second reason, it was not announced public as of that date, but the Col was being promoted
and going to Edmonton to be commander of the Land Forces Western Area. The Colonel showed deep
curiosity in setting up a ride for only serving members this summer. The ride would be from Edmonton
to Wainwright AB. The idea or concept would be to charge a $20.00 fee to join the ride then all the
proceeds would go to Veterans Organizations. The second year he would like to open this to the Veteran
riding groups as well. The Colonel then explained he would be very interested in having the CAV help
him put together this event, using his business card information to pass onto a contact. I explained that
I would pass this onto 3rd CAV President Kaiser for his consideration of passing on to Iron Mike
President of Frezenberg Unit who in turn would contact the Colonel, to offer their and the CAVs help. Of
course I do understand this would be with the blessings of all from Trapper our National President down
to Iron Mikes Frezenberg Unit and their desire to get involved. I do have the Colonels information and if
it is to be passed on to Iron Mike, Please have him send me an e-mail and in turn I will forward this to
him.
Thanks for your time reading this lengthy letter. I just thought it was important to thank all involved for
allowing us such a great opportunity and for passing on some perspective adventures to get the CAV
involved in.
Sincerely,

Hi All
Everything is going well in 3rd CAV with planning and coordinating rides and events, demonstrating the
units goals and achievements.
With the winter season escalating the PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome) we all tend to forget we are
all here to ride and have fun and support each other, therefore with the weather changing and warming
up so starts of the new year. I just wanted to re-emphasize the goals and directions as I see it as we
grow and build the positive energies all the units demonstrates what we can accomplish on a daily basis.
Thus as we gear up for the season ahead please pass my thoughts to the members and check out
the3rd CAV web site for the poster on this year’s 3rd CAV gathering.
Have Fun all and I hope to see as many of you on the road or at the gathering as possible.

3rd CAV 2012 Presidential Address
As another Riding season approaches I just want to emphasize the Ideals and philosophy of the CAV as
I see it ” Ride, Have Fun, and support one another “with the understanding that Family comes first, then
the Job that supports them, then the CAV.
There isn’t anywhere in the constitution that places one unit ahead of another or for that matter one
formation in front of another. The philosophy is that “the CAV” is one entity, with individual units allowed
to run their units in the direction that the membership wants to take them, as long as that direction
remains within the constitution. From doing weekend rides to supporting charities and helping veterans
and the community at large.
The CAV is all of us. There is no distinction from town to town, province to province or formation to
formation. Each individual member enjoys the same rights and privileges as any other. By
maintaining these ideals we can never engage in empire building, exclusion or animosity toward any
other units for the outstanding Positive energy and all they have accomplished. I believe and have
always maintained that there can be no such thing as a spy in the CAV, because we are all CAV, with
one goal and one mission.
CAV events and meetings should be open to any CAV member that would like to attend. This gives all
of the CAV the opportunity to see and learn from their brother units, how things are being done and
where their positive energies are being directed. CAV members visiting another unit will understand, of
course, that they are guests. They will not vote or disrupt the proceedings and thus, as guests should
be welcomed with open arms and treated with all due hospitality. This holds true with events as well,
especially ones with regional or national scope. For example if unit A organizes an event and Units B,C,
D are in the area they should be given the opportunity to join in with a “the more the merrier”
approach. If there is space allotted only for a certain or specific amount of bikes, it would look even
more impressive if the other units were to have the opportunity to participate to show the breadth and
strength of the CAV by having as many unit flags flying as possible. Every unit across the country can
and does these things with in their own flair and within the CAV policies and procedures governing their
members as the membership allows with the understanding that as a voluntary riding organization we
are here to support and enjoy the comradeship of our fellow veterans who share the love of motorcycles
and riding.

Subject: Portraits Of Honour Calgary Visit
Good Morning Klaus,
I wanted to bring you up to speed on our plans for the coming mural return to Calgary. We would like to
extend an invitation to all of our events for the two days. There is a lot of info here that we would ask
you to pass on to your CAV members in all ways possible. The first day's events are all free to attend,
and, I believe that the CAV Riders will be escorting the trailer into the downtown for the Monday public
event. I would ask that you urge your CAV members to attend the Museums event. It is free, casual,
and will be a great opportunity to see friends, view the mural, and meet CAV Dave Sopha, the painter
who created the mural. We are looking to have as many military, reserve, and veterans attend as
possible.
As for Tuesday night's event, we are still looking to sell tickets and tables for this fundraising portion of
the visit. We have some Honour guests for the evening in Rick Hillier, Mark Fuchko, and families of
Calgary's fallen soldiers. I have included a sponsorship attachment that I would ask you to forward, as
well. If you know anyone who can help us fill the room for this night, please send our info.
My contact info is at the bottom of this letter, and I would be happy to answer any suggestions,
questions, or ticket requests you may have.
Sincerely,
Allen Martin
Portraits of Honour Mural Visits Calgary
You may have heard of the Portraits of Honour National Tour which is sponsored by Kin Canada and is
travelling across Canada to raise money and awareness for our Canadian soldiers who have given so
much on behalf of Canada in the Afghanistan theatre.
The Portraits of Honour National Tour is centered on a 10' x 40' oil painted mural featuring the hand
painted portraits of the 157 Canadian soldiers, sailors and aircrew who have lost their lives while serving
in Afghanistan. The mural has taken Kinsmen and volunteer artist Dave Sopha over 6,500 hours so far
to paint but admits that his work won’t be complete until our combat mission in Afghanistan comes to a
close.
The mural is being toured across Canada in a specialized mobile display trailer, commencing May 27,
2011 and is expected to raise over $1.5 million. The funds raised will support the Military Families Fund
and established military charities to assist families of the fallen and to assist the thousands of military
personnel who return home with physical or emotional injuries. Organizers will also seek to fund other
charities who offer additional troop and family support that falls outside of the Military Families Fund
mandate.
There will be three Portraits of Honour events in Calgary:
• On Monday, September 19, a small parade will form at Deerfoot Mall to escort the mural into the
downtown core, where it will be on display on Stephen Avenue Mall from 11 AM until 2 PM.
• Monday from 5 PM until 8 PM we will be hosting a "Thank Our Troops" evening. The mural will be
on display at The Military Museums at 4520 Crowchild Tr S. The museums will remain open until 8pm,
and there is no admission fees for the trailer or the museums. This event is aimed at providing a
personal viewing to as many military personnel and families as possible, as well as all Kinsmen and
Kinettes.
• On Tuesday, September 20, a fundraising Gala will be held at Heritage Park - Gasoline Alley. As
well as providing an opportunity for viewing of the mural, the event features General Rick Hillier ret.,
former Chief of Defense Staff of Canada’s forces, as our guest speaker. Tickets for this event are $200
each. As tickets are limited, please purchase your tickets as soon as possible if you wish to attend!
Tickets can be purchased by contacting Keith Hodgson via e-mail at tickets@portraitsofhonourcalgary.ca,

“Thank Our Troops” Evening @ The Military Museums
Kin Canada is proud to announce that the Portraits of Honour mural will soon be arriving in Calgary. The
Portraits of Honour mural is touring the country to honour our fallen soldiers, and to raise money for the
Portraits of Honour Fund. Portraits of Honour is dedicated to providing financial support that will help.
This tour will provide Canadians from coast to coast with an opportunity to honour and celebrate our
Canadian soldiers, pay respect to those who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice and to recognize the
challenges that face those who will return home with lasting physical or emotional injuries.
We are very happy to extend an invitation to our “Thank Our Troops” evening at the Military Museums
in Calgary on Monday September 19th. This special evening is meant as a "Thank You" to the men and
women in our many branches of the Canadian Armed Forces and Veterans. It is a casual "come and go"
event to allow you to see this incredible mural, view the museums, and spend some time with friends.
The creator of this mural, and a CAV member, Mr. Dave Sopha will be on hand to enjoy the evening with
you.
The Military Museums have been a great support in this event by extending their 5:00 pm closing time
to 8:00 pm on the 19th. The admission charge to view this fantastic facility has also been waived for
this special event. There will hamburgers and drinks available and proceeds will be donated to the
Portraits of Honour fund.

In short, The Military Museums has taken on the task of coordinating event requests for public speakers
in the days and weeks leading up to Remembrance Day with those that are interested in speaking from
their military experiences.
For ease of distribution to your volunteers, I have attached digital versions of the sign up forms. The

From the Office of the Executive Director, The Military Museums
6 September 2011
To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing to garner your support and that of your formation headquarters and units, to assist The
Military Museums with this years’ Remembrance Day outreach program. The Military Museums Council,
our governing body, requested that we offer to take lead on the coordination of all school and other
requests for veteran/serving personnel outreach speakers. As you know, requests for speakers come
from all over to all of us (i.e. Calgary based units, the Royal Canadian Legion(s), our myriad Veteran
organizations as well as to individuals). The desire is to offer those requesting a speaker a “one-stop”
location to manage/fulfill their request. Traditionally, we acquire requests for guest speakers as early
as September through to mid December.
The speaker’s role is simple: to outline the importance of Remembrance, to add commentary on the
speaker’s personal experience and to respond to questions.
The above said, we are currently looking for speakers to participate in this years outreach program and
the members of your organization, all Calgary based Canadian Forces units and other veteran
organizations are and or will be invited to participate. Enclosed you will find a volunteer form and the
relevant instructions for those wishing to volunteer as a Remembrance Day outreach speaker.
In closing, I would like to thank you in advance for your time and consideration as well as your ongoing
support for Canadian military history and the Remembrance Day outreach speaker program.
Sincerely,
Tom Doucette
Executive Director

REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEER SPEAKERS
During the lead up to Remembrance Day on 11 November, The Military Museums (TMM) coordinates
requests for public speakers between schools or Remembrance Day related events with past or current
military members to help tell the story of those who served Canada and its history.
We are currently looking for speakers to participate in the community for these events. If you or
someone you know might be interested in helping, please fill out the enclosed “Outreach Speaker
Request Form” and fax it to (403) 974-2858 or mail it to: The Military Museums c/o Outreach Speaker
Program, 4520 Crowchild Tr SW, Calgary AB T2T 5J4. Your coordinator is 2Lt. Peter Musters and he can
be reached by phone at (403) 246-3392 or email at peter@themilitarymuseums.ca
You will be given the contact information for a speaking engagement that suits your schedule and can
contact them at your earliest convenience. These requests will be at least three weeks prior to the
booking date, with most requests for the days leading up to 11 November. If the engagement is to be
cancelled, the organization that has requested you has been instructed to give you at least two business
days notice.
Although the group requesting you to speak may have a Remembrance Day theme you may not be
able to speak directly to it. Please feel free to speak to an aspect of Canadian military history to which
you are familiar. Those requesting you are aware of this.
In order to support your speaking engagement, a DVD with two PowerPoint presentations will be
available and also online at www.themilitarymuseums.ca. Click ‘learn’ and follow the links for both the
Grade 1-9 and Grade 10 to adult versions. All audio-visual equipment and its setup will be the

Subject: Fwd: RE: Motorcycle Training discount offer
To all of the folks listed on here. CAV has scored another discount. Read the message below, and Klaus
with your blessings can we get this put onto 3rd CAV web page and where ever else you might find it
appropriate. This is for the studies to be done in Calgary, however it is good for any Vet, or serving
military member and or their family members, no matter where they live in Canada. But once again
they must come or be here in Calgary to do the course.
Mouse once Klaus approves this can you do the dirty deed and post for us? For everyone else this is
info only. Might be a good time to get family members on the road to riding. I would but all my children
and their spouses ride, as does She Wolf.
Cheers Brothers and Sister.
